Reduce, Reuse, Recycle - Your Natural hair and going green

Updated: Aug 16, 2020

As a result of the increased production of plastic, a reduction in waste management and a reduction in recycling, tons of plastic are ending up in the world's oceans each year and causing great harm to our eco-system.

But why is plastic such a hazard to the environment? Because it is not biodegradable.

When an item is biodegradable, it means the item is capable of being decomposed by bacteria or other living organismz. In other words, the ability for the material to break down and return to nature within a short period of time.

Plastic is unique because it sticks around for up to 1,000 years.

As a natural hair enthusiast, we are always looking for ways to reduce, reuse and/or recycle. Natural hair products often come in plastic containers but there is no reason to avoid using them. The goal is to Reduce, Reuse or Recycle.

Here are some things you can do as a lover of natural hair to ensuer that you are not contributing to the problem.

Reuse single use items: You can do this by reusing the plastic containers you get for other things around your home. Some containers can be painted and used as planters or for showing off beautiful wild flowers.

Reduce waste: You can reduce waste by purchasing products that last longer. This means you are shopping less frequently and reducing the use of products that are not biodegradable. Pay attention to quantity. If you can get a larger volume per bottle, do so since it means you won't have to purchase the product multiple times. Plus you often save this way.

There are several meme's that show how natural hair lovers use conditioners as opposed to shampoo. The bottle often gives instructions of what is needed and the user uses a lot more than is called for. This then leads to waste. I encourage you to use the product the way it is intended and the amounts outlined on the bottle. The manufacturers know how much is needed to achieve results. Using more than is required can lead to unexpected results. Not to mention you go through the product faster than needed and as such, increase the likelihood of having to purchase the product again.

Also, consider getting a makeup spatula that'll allow you to get to the bottom of the product bottle and reduce waste.

Recycle your plastic bottles: Not all plastic containers are created equally. Manufacturers will place the recycle logo on their containers if it can be recycled. Choose those items over the ones that can't be recycled. Glass bottles are better than plastic but that often means higher prices. If you can't find the product you want in a glass bottle, go for the ones that have the recycle logo.

Most people throw their containers in the trash when done with it. Instead of placing the finished containers in the trash, recycle them! A lot of neighborhoods in the US either offer recycle pickup or a recycle center for disposing of recyclable containers. Yes, it is an added step but you can take comfort in knowing you are doing your part to save the environment.
